The Trading Place Quilt Garden will be patterned after block #14 of the Shipshewana Blessings Quilt, the Log Cabin layout. The Log Cabin design is one of the most popular quilting patterns today and has been frequently used by the Amish in our area. Its traditional red center represents the heart or the hearth of the home and the strips around the center, which vary in shades from light to dark, represent the logs of the cabin. The Log Cabin blocks can be set together in a variety of ways, including designs such as Barn Raising, Sunshine and Shadow, and Straight Furrow. Our Quilt Garden will be laid out in Sunshine and Shadow design.
The Trading Place Quilt Garden has twelve 8’x8’ blocks covering an area of 38’x48’ and contains 800 square feet of flowers! It took approximately 2,500 annuals to create this garden. Six different varieties of annuals are represented: blue ageratums, lavender verbenas, orange and yellow marigolds, white zinnias, and red salvia.
The Blessing Quilt, which this garden is patterned after, was created in 2004 by a few regional women who were commissioned to create a quilt for the town hall that would combine design elements from two diverse cultures who had made Shipshewana their home: the Potawatomi and the Amish. The Blessing Quilt is on display in the Wolfe Building (downtown Shipshewana). To find out more about the Blessing Quilt, stop by the Farmstead Inn gift shop for a copy of the book Shipshewana Blessings.
Each year we plan to select a different block from the Blessing Quilt to model the quilt garden after. Visit again next summer to see which block we’ve chosen!
